1987: “Heidenmission aus der Heide” (Heathen Mission from the heath)
or “Hermannsburg”. 1 hr, 16 mm.
The history of the Hermannsburg Mission in Central Australia and
Hermannsburg, Germany.

An extended Australian version – one hour – was made for SBS Television
in 1987. Title: “The Germans in Australia”.
Contents: The changing fortunes of German migrants in Australia from the First Fleet until today. Sections of this film are on the “Australian Screen“ web site. The link above will take directly to it.

Bergen-Belsen, for example”  1 hr. 16 mm. A co-production of
Southern Cross TV Productions, Chronos-Film Berlin and the Landeszentrale fuer politische Bildung in Hannover.

The film shows the liberation of the Bergen Belsen concentration camp
from an Australian angle, twice removed by distance and time (40
years later). All witnesses filmed in Australia, e.g. survivors, one of the soldiers
who first entered the camp (Arthur Bushnell) and cameraman Mike Lewis, who shot the historical footage of the liberation and now lived in Canberra.
The film contains about 10 min stock footage, copyright Imperial War
Museum, London. Apart from this, all international rights to the documentary (but for German speaking countries) are owned by Southern Cross Television.
This film was shown on German Television (ARD) and the English language version can be viewed at the Belsen Memorial. It includes an evaluation by Simone Veil, President of the European Parliament and a survivor of Bergen-Belsen. It was also shown at the Jewish Holocaust Conference in Sydney in 1986. Segments of the film

Work on a shortened and updated version was concluded in 1995. This
Version, 23 min. is shown every hour to visitors of the Bergen-Belsen
Memorial. near Celle, Germany. In English, German, French and Spanish.
Its title is identical. The “for example” refers to Belsen as just one of more
than a thousand Concentration camps in Nazi Germany.
1983: “Trauminsel mit Barriere oder wie kommt man nach Neuseeland?“
( Dream Island with barriers or how to get to New Zealand) 45 min. Produced by Southern Cross Television Productions on behalf of German Television (ARD) and shown on the 1st Program. 
The film deals mainly with the question of New Zealand’s immigration policy.
Author, director and producer. Camera: Keith Bushnell. Contains interviews with the
Austrian painter Friedensreich Hundertwasser and then Prime Minister Robert (“Piggy”) Muldoon.
1982: “Die Schatzsucher Australiens.” (Treasure hunters of Australia) 45 min.

1979: “Rohstoff-Supermarkt Australien-verpasst Europa eine Chance? (Supermarket of resources – does Europe miss a chance?) 45 min. For German TV (ARD).
I was Author, Director, Producer. Camera Joachim Heidrich. Australian rights to film with Southern Cross TV, but no English language version.
Film contains the story of Lang Hancock. He re-enacts how he discovered the iron ore of the Pilbara, piloting a small plane.
1979: A short 10 min. item on Lang Hancock for “Weltspiegel” (a kind of 4 corners

1978: “Abschied vom britischen Erbe” (Farewell to British Heritage) 45 min. Produced on behalf of  Sender Freies Berlin (ARD). Author, director, producer.
Camera: Joachim Heidrich. Subject: Changes in Australian Immigration Policy. Contains shots from Old Sydney Town, Sydney Martin Plaza, Interview mayor Leo Port. 1986: “Lower Saxonia 1945”, English language version of my documentary on the end of the war in Germany, 45 min. Author, director. Produced by Chronos Film Berlin and the State of Lower Saxonia. The English version was requested by the British Army for training purposes in that area.
1985: “Ein Haus der Macht”. 45 min. A film on the history of the infamous IG-Farbenindustrie and its headquarters in Fankfurt.  Director and co-author. Contains film clips from Bernd Sinkel’s trilogy “Fathers and sons” and an interview with Bernd Sinkel. IG Farben ran the Auschwitz concentration camp and supplied the poison for the gas chambers. Interview with a Jewish survivor and the managers of the “IG Farbenindustrie in liquidation”, who state that business relations with US firms were kept up right to the end of WWII. Filmed at the IG Farben building, which was now the US army headquarters.  Produced by and for Hessischer Rundfunk Fernsehen in Frankfurt and shown (though only once) on the First network
of German television (ARD)
1984: “Wer war Walter Rathenau? (Who was Walter Rathenau?) 45 min. A tribute to the German Foreign Minister and philosopher murdered by nationalist fanatics in 1923. Author and director. As only 18 seconds of original footage on him exist, research carries the story. Hessischer Rundfunk Frankfurt, several repeats on ARD 1st programme
1983: “Transatlantik-Route – die grosse Zeit der Liner” 45 min. A documentary on the great time of the Ocean liners. Locations: Bremerhaven, Cork (Ireland), New York. Author. The second of a line of “entertaining documentaries”, mainly filmed aboard the German ship “Europa”, containing historical footage. Hessischer Rundfunk, ARD 1st programme
1982: “Wolkenkatzer im Zwielicht” (Skyscrapers in the twilight). 45 min. On the future of high rise buildings, filmed in New York and Chicago. Very critical on the World Trade Centre and its safety. Author. Hessischer Rundfunk, ARD 1st programme. The film contains interviews with George Kreuscher of NY Fire Brigades, Carolyn Bellamy (then President of NY City parliament) and Pulitzer Prize winner Paul Gapp of the Chicago Tribune who claims that skyscrapers are a dying species.

1981:”Die Saat des Zweifels”(The seeds of doubt). A documentary on the leaflet war and psychological warfare in WW2. 45 min. Filmed in Germany, England and the United States. Author, director. Hessischer Rundfunk, ARD 1st programme. Interviews amongst others: Martin Herz, former US chief leaflet writer, Lev Kopelev, former Soviet propaganda writer and Klaus Kirchner, leading author on leaflets.

“Ernst Reuter” (mayor of post World War 2 West Berlin). 45 min. Filmed in Germany and Turkey. Interviews with Willy Brandt, then German Chancellor; and Reuter’s son Edzard, then CEO of Mercedes-Benz in Stuttgart. 1st programme, author and director.

Der Schatten des Caudillo –The shadow of Franco. Reflects on Spain’s past after
dictator Franco’s death and how the people deal with his legacy. Filmed on the battlefields of the civil war. Interviews with former prisoners, historians and
politicians. 45 min, Author and director

Die Schweiz und die Fremden -Switzerland and its foreigners. The harsh treatment of refugees in World War II and restrictions for guest workers. Interviews with historians Rudolf v. Salis, Alfred Jaesler, politicians and the Swiss President Furgler. 45 min.Author and director.

Vaterland, liebVaterland –Fatherland, dear Fatherland. A film on the national psyche in the Federal Republic of Germany. What does “Fatherland” mean to young people and to soldiers in the new democratic army? Interviews with Helmth Kohl (later German chancellor) and the Inspector General of the German army, Admiral Zimmermann. Filmed at historic locations – Hambach, Niederwald-Denkmal, Valhalla near Regensburg. 45 minutes, author and director.

Gustav Stresemann. Portrait of the German Foreign Minister in the late 20’s, who took Germany back into the League of Nations. Filmed in Geneva, Lugano, New York, Berlin. Interviews with historian Rudolf v. Salis and politicians, amongst them Richard v.Weizsaecker, later German President. 45 min. Author and director.

Das Jahr der 10 Millionen. Cuba struggles to achieve a sugar harvest of 10 million tons. This is the only report I ever made as a one man band. Author, director, camera,
sound, producer. 30 min. Shown on 1st programme, German television. I invented some names to pretend I had a crew.

Neue Modelle fuer Castro’s Cuba - New models for Castro’s Cuba. 45 min., author, director and producer. Shown on 1st programme, German television. On the socio-economic experiment to abolish money and introduce socialism, not of Soviet style but with cha-cha-cha.

Erzieht Cuba den Neuen Menschen? – does Cuba educate the new man? 45 min., Author, director and producer. This film, though highly praised by the institute for film in science and education, was never shown on television and the soundtrack to it got lost at Chronos. Apparently no copy can be traced. I am mentioning it nevertheless, as it dealt with the introduction of high school education for every Cuban.

Interviews with Argentine historian Hugo Gambini, President Barrienos of Bolivia, friend Ricardo Rojo. Contains a statement by Georg Lucacs, philosopher in Budapest, and a song by Nacha Guevara, the acclaimed Argentine performer.
